The tightness is technically know as 'Character Spacing'. To change character spacing settings.1. Ctrl + A to select all text in the document2. Go Home tab- options group 'Fonts'. At bottom right of that group is a small downward pointing arrow, that is the dialog box launcher. (just below the font color change button)Click it.3. Font options box will pop up. Select Tab 'Advanced'4. There is Character Spacing option. Set spacing to 'Normal' or any other value that you desire.

It adjusts the spacing between adjacent characters based on their shapes. Optical kerning can be used when a font lacks built-in kerning or when more than one typeface or font size is used within the same word. The kerning control is located in the Character Palette beneath the Font Size control.

Type two letters next to each other. Highlight both letters. Go to Format...Font. In the Font dialog box, go to the Character Spacing tab. Set the Spacing to Condensed, and increase the number from 1pt to 10pt. Click OK. 10pt might not be the ideal amount of condensing, so experiment and adjust as needed.
times new roman 12 point font and single spacing is probably acceptable as well as double.
At the bottom right of the Font group click on the ShowDialog button.

Additionally, adjusting the kerning or character spacing can also create the illusion of a larger font size while keeping the same font. Lastly, using bold or italic styling can add emphasis and make the text appear slightly larger on the page.
