They are real to those who believe in them. However, Medusa was both female and not a god, and although Medusa was considered a monster, Hades wasn't exactly 'evil'.

He was solemn and gloomy, definitely, but wouldn't you be if your wife was forced to be with you part of the year & you lived amongst dead people? I would be. It was part of the job description to be dark if you ruled the Underworld.
