David Michael Draiman (born March 13, 1973 in Brooklyn, New York) is songwriter and lead singer for the Chicago band Disturbed, originally known as Brawl (1994-1996). A former girlfriend of Draiman's committed suicide when he was about 15 years old. Draiman triple majored in Political Science, Philosophy, and Business Administration at Loyola University Chicago with serious thoughts of going to law school. Draiman joined the band Brawl in 1996 and re-named it Disturbed. In a Feb. 19, 2005 LiveWire interview Draiman said, "It had been a name I have been contemplating for a band for years. It just seems to symbolize everything we were feeling at the time. The level of conformity that people are forced into was disturbing to us and we were just trying to push the envelope and the name just sorta made sense.". During a live DeepRockDrive concert performance in 2008 (prior to the song Deify) Draiman was asked, "Dave is your girlfriend 'hot'?" He replied, "My girlfriend is actually sick smokin' hot. She should be around here somewhere. She is beautiful." Draiman, in a recent interview, said that his now-former fiancée, Jasmine, is half Persian and half German. Draiman is from an Orthodox Jewish background and has about 200 relatives living in Israel, including his grandmother and brother. He has said in the past that although he strongly supports Israel and Israeli causes he is not particularly religious himself. Draiman is reported to have said in a December 2008 interview,"My fiancée just left me a few weeks ago, I've got family problems - there are plenty of issues in my life to draw on for lyrics."
