Yes, yes, yes. Recoil is subjective to many people. About 2-4lbs difference depending on load.
Automatic weapons typically use recoil or a gas blowback system to eject the spent cartridge casing and reload the next cartridge from the magazine. Blowback systems use the gas from the powder ignition of the cartridge to eject the casing and reload the next shell. A portion of the ignited gas is redirected to force the action back far enough to reload. Most automatic weapons use this design. Recoil systems are just what it implies - the recoil from the ignited cartridge forces the bolt back and reloads the next.
Semi-automatic firearms, such as the 1911A1 pistol use a spring to help absorb some of the recoil energy, and use the energy to reload the pistol.
I recommend a 9mm. Glock or Springfield Armory= Most value for your money, largest magazine capacity and lightest recoil. A revolver of any manufacturer is going to have added recoil far less capacity and more time consuming to reload. Revolvers are highly inaccurate as well. A revolver has no spring or slide to absorb any recoil so in turn when you shoot a revolver the gun will jump upwards and it will take you longer to get your target back in your sights.
The 38 special will be in a revolver and the 380 ACP most probably a semi-auto. However some of the energy of the bullet is used to eject and reload the 380 which dampens the recoil a bit. Also the .38 special is actually 0.357 " diam and the 380 is 0.355". The upshot of it all is that the .38 would have more recoil.
