One of the main differences between the 2, is that the input shaft is a smaller diameter for the 2.3 than the 5.0 engine. With the correct size pilot bearing installed into the end of the crankshaft, the transmissions will interchange. The main thing to remember is that the 2.3 liter transmission has a lower torque rating than the 5.0 liter transmission. If driven without harsh punishment, the 2.3 liter transmission will live behind a stock 5.0 liter.
Since most of the weight of the engine is supported by the transmission mounts, the engine has to be supported from the top while the transmission is dropped out the bottom. You have to take loose the crossmember, exhaust pipe, the half axles, and about 23 different things. Get a manual from Haynes at the parts store. It will pay for itself the first time you use it.
