The population of koalas is decreasing. This is primarily due to habitat loss, the risks posed by cars and attacking dogs, and the emergence of the disease chlamydia, which renders females infertile. The koala had previously been listed as Common throughout the eastern states (excluding Tasmanis, where it is not present), but in 2012, the Federal government in Australia upgraded the conservation listing in Queensland, New South Wales and the ACT to 'Vulnerable'.
