Possums, which are found only in Australia and neighbouring islands (and are quite different to opossums) have numerous species. Some of these are threatened; many are not.

Gliders are also possums. The sugar glider, feathertail glider and greater glider are not threatened, but the squirrel glider is listed as threatened. The yellow-bellied glider is threatened in New South Wales but not elsewhere. The Mahogany glider is endangered.
They aren't threatened, but their close cousins the Leadbeaters possum and the mahogany glider are especially threatened.
The Eastern pygmy possum is considered "lower risk" in Queensland, with an official status as "Common" and therefore not threatened. However, it has recently been upgraded to "vulnerable" in New South Wales under the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995. It is not listed under any conservation act in Victoria, but in South Australia it is "Vulnerable".
A cornered possum is capable of vicious attack. they have sharp claws and teeth that can pull out another animal's fur and skin, if they are threatened. Cats usually come off worse in a possum-fight, but dogs can quite easily kill them.

Possums have a number of noises they make to talk to other possums. When they feel threatened, they make a hissing sound. When fighting or mating, they squeal.

Since being introduced to New Zealand, the possum has bred prolifically and caused a great deal of damage to native NZ forests by eating young trees and feeding off new shoots. As a result, they have caused a reduction in the the kiwi's habitat which, in turn, has threatened its food source.

Opossums do not spray. That would be a skunk. Opossums hang upside down from tree branches and if threatened they roll into a tight ball and play dead. Thus the phrase "playing possum".
There is no such thing as a merino possum. However, "possum merino yarn" is a blend of possum fur and fine Merino wool, made in New zealand, where the possum is an introduced pest.
