In most cases yes but not all. The battery cable could have been replaced and the original color may have not been followed. Normally we do think of red being positive and black being negative. It is possible to make a black cable work on a positive battery terminal although it needs the end opened up to do it.
The positive terminal is always the LARGEST one on the battery itself, the negative being the smaller. This is true on batteries with terminals or posts on the top. If the battery uses a side mount for the cables, each terminal should be marked + / -
