The absolute facts about Ramayana:

Ramayana and history:

Ramayana is a great epic that is based on facts. The places mentioned in it have real existence. Hindus, therefore, believe that it is a text book of history and not a mythological book.

However, it has to be realized that Hinduism, by default, keeps its followers at the junction of their real and imaginary worlds. This, is also the way human beings are supposed to live. Looked from this angle Ramayana looks like a historical event.

If we look at Ramayana from the real world itself i.e. scientifically, it may become difficult for us to believe that it is historical. Hanuman uprooting a mountain and flying in the air with the mountain in one hand won't make much sense to us.

The message of Ramayana:

Ramayana has a great message that makes it a sacred book and eternally popular. It encourages Hindus to be satisfied with whatever they have. The epic, in fact, is about what happens if we cross the boundary of satisfaction and enter an unknown world.

1. This crossing of the boundary of satisfaction is symbolized in Ramayana by the kidnapping of Sita by Ravana.

2. Ravana is symbolic of the bad parallel life, that is independent of our main life.

3. Killing of Ravana is symbolic of the destruction of our bad parallel life.

4. Return of Rama to Ayodhya with Sita is symbolic of our return to our controllable natural life i.e. a life between our positive and negative attitudes.

If we want to put into practice the message of Ramayana, and thus discard our greed, then we have to firmly believe that it is a historical event.
