No, the Sunnah is not optional for a Muslim. The holy Qur'an was revealed to the last Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (May peace and blessings of Almighty Allah be upon him). No one else knew about a single word thus revealed. It was the last Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (May peace and blessings of Almighty Allah be upon him) who told his followers that such and such verses were revealed to him. We believe those verses to be the holy Qur'an.

The same trust must be reposed in the Sunnah and Sayings of the last Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (May peace and blessings of Almighty Allah be upon him). Moreover, the Sunnah and Hadith explain the verses of Qur'an. The Muslims are ordained by Almighty Allah to pray to Him five times a day. But, how, how many Rakats, what to recite in Qiaam (Standing), or Rakuh and Sijda all these details have been given by Sunna and Hadith. Many things have been prohibited by thelast Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (May peace and blessings of Almighty Allah be upon him) which are not mentioned in detail in the holy Qur'an.

Thus, Sunnah is as obligatory and compulsory for the Muslims as the Qur'an. The difficulty may be faced in determining the originality and authenticity of the Hadith. In that connection a lot of effort has been made by the Imams of Hadith- Imam Bukhari (RU), Imam Muslim (RU), Imam Malik (RU) and others.

Putting aside the Sunna on one or the other pretext may not be Islamic.
