A storage device is both an input and output device. I has to be if it is to store something like data. Consider that a hard drive is a computer memory device, and data is both written to and read from the hard drive during normal operation of the computer. If the hard drive did not have the capability of input and output, it would not be useful in its application in the computer.

Input and Output devices are peripherals attached to computers. All devices can be classified as Input, Output, or both Input and Output. The determination can be made by looking at the device from the computers standpoint. A keyboard is an Input device because the computer inputs data from it. A video monitor is an Output device because the computer outputs data to it. Hard disk drives are both Input and Output, because the computer both Outputs data to it and Inputs data from it.

The distinction of the I/O class of today's peripherals somewhat blurred (as opposed to back in the infancy of computing) because peripherals today are far more intelligent than any of their predecessors. Their ability to service their own tasks make them intelligent peripherals. For instance, keyboards are not just a bank of switches (as they were in the beginning) and relieve the computer from having to constantly scan the keyboard for us to make a key press. It used to be one of the computers functions, to scan the keyboard for a key press every pass through its main loop. Back when all peripherals were "Dumb", they consumed a considerable amount of the computers resources by having to be serviced by the computer itself. Putting intelligent controllers into peripherals frees the processor from these overhead tasks and allow it to apply far more of its computing resources to the users desires.

Is a CPU an output or an input device?

A CPU is a central processing unit. It is neither an input nor an output device, but it is usually connected to both kinds of devices. An input device would be a keyboard or a mouse. And output device would be a printer, a hard or floppy drive, or a memory chip in a thumb drive.

Is a Visual Display unit a input or a output?

Its an output device. By visual display unit I assume you're referring to one of the following: a tv, a computer monitor or a laptop screen. All 3 are output devices. The difference b/w an input and an output device is simply user input. An input device receives input from a user, an output device does not. A mouse (receives user clicks), A microphone (receives user audio), a keyboard are input devices.
