The takedown is generally considered more desireable. sales@countrygunsmith.net
Best left to a trained gunsmith.
It is located on the bottom forward edge of the receiver frame (forward of the loading port). If your Model 1897 is a Take Down model, it will also be stamped on the bottom of the Take Down extension ring (and will be located directly above the serial number stamped into the receiver frame). what is a winchester model 37 stillbuilt 12ga shotgun worth is has a pig tail where it breaks down and is in good shap
whatever someone will pay you. The went for $ 25.00 in 1925 and Uncle Fred bought one that mom & dad passed down to me. It still works like a champ so I think it's probaly worth 3-400 bucks.
You must use an ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTION SHEET WITH PART NUMBERS AND DIAGRAMS and follow it to the letter. I have them for $5.55. Don guncolletor@att.net
Your model 1897 was made in 1898, according to the serial number records that remain. The value can range from $75 for a common 12 gauge field model in poor condition to $3000 for an excellent condition black diamond trap model. The most common were field grade guns in 12 ga., typically they came with a 30" barrel, full choked. The "bluing" finish on the metal is usually worn off the early ones or, if they were stored for long periods of time, it has turned to a brown 'patina'. With the original stock and forestock free of cracks, these are worth approximately $400 in good condition. Add $100 for 16 ga. Add $200 if in like new condition. Riot/police models are worth an extra $200 (look for 20" barrel and metal buttplate). Military "trench" models are worth an extra $400 - 800. Solid frame versions (as opposed to the later take-down design) are worth an extra $100. Beware of fake riot, trench, and trap models.
The backside upside down one is the standard issue.--well worn $60. The other variety is called a "medal" coin and is not upside down--it is worth $300 ( well worn)
Your "standard" 1911a1 is worth somewhere in the range of $500 in excellent condition. It can go up or down from there depending on models, add-ons, condition. A good place to look for market values is gunbroker.com, or other similar sites. Search, and match yours to theirs as to condition and model and see where the market is.
We can narrow it down to sometime between 1897 and 1977. Over a million model 97's were manufactured over that 80 year period. Give a serial number and we can determine an exact year for yours.
What condition is it in, and what is the serial number? Is it a Take Down or a Solid Frame? Bert H.
That's all down to the particular watch, the model and the condition. Some are, and some aren't.
