Yes, a ship called the Titanic actually did sink in 1912. What happens in the movie is not the actual story. Also, just recently people are starting to doubt the reasoning behind the sinking from the iceberg, and have started to look more into it.
Of course the Titanic is a real story! It was the longest ship in the world in her time and she was classed as 'unsinkable'. But what happens in the movie is not all true. Some of it is, some isn't. Yes, I myself find the Titanic fascinating. I agree with the doubting of the iceberg theory. The iceberg was hit and gashed the side of the RMS Titanic, but this wasn't entirely the reason of the sinking of the ship. Other reasons include:
The iron rivets being to weak
The ship being turned the wrong way
The ship going to fast
The water tight compartments not reaching the top, so water could rise to the top and then flow over into the next compartment.
As with many historical-based films writers feel the need to fictionalize, invent characters and then frame them in a historical situation-in this case the Titanic disaster. The characters Jack Davis and Rose ( his paramour) are as far as is known fictional characters. This sort of thing is done all the time in War Movies to add a human dimension into battles and so on. The process is called historical license.
