Yes; but.....
With the caveat that this is BMW company policy as per their reduced maintenance/planned obsolescence program. Bimmerpost and E90forums all have independent experts who recommend changing the manual tranny fluid between 30-50k miles.
BMW transmissions are "lifetime fill" meaning that they don't recommend changing the transmission fluid.
5 speed or auto?
how do you change the trans fluid on a 1997 328i automatic trans
You can use any SAE certified transmission fluid in your 2001 BMW automatic transmission. The automaker recommends that you never overfill the transmission fluid.
There is no dip stick for the transmission. there is a drain / fill plug on the side. Open the plug. if fluid comes out you are good. if not fill until fluid drains out.

There are several things that can cause your transmission malfunction light to come on. The most common cause is low transmission fluid.
I have a 2006 325i and i have jumped it.
Through dipstick tube is usual method w/ a narrow funnel.
if it is an automatic there will be a filler neck in the engine compartment, if it is a standard however, there will be a plug on the side of the transmission that will need to be unscrewed, fill until fluid just trickles out and bolt it back up, the fact that you need to top up the level makes me think there is a leak somewhere (front or end seal, or the case itself, find it, leaks only get worse Uhm.... this answer is completely wrong! Your 2001 BMW 325i has a lifetime fill so the only way to check it is on a lift and this is something I would recommend you have a professional do. If there is something going on with the transmission fluid in that year and make of car it's most likely a leak.
It depends on whether or not it is a manual or auto-tragic transmission. Either way it's a relatively simple process of removing a bolt on the bottom of the transmission case and then use a pump to add fluid. There is a full write up on pelican parts.
It's on the driver side close to the firewall. The fluid type is indicated on the top which is about 2 1/2 to 3 inches in diameter.
