Most Transformers have coils made of pure copper. This copper is really pure, and it is not an alloy.

Certainly we know of situations where other materials are used to wind the cores of transformers. In superconcuctive matnets, the coils are alloys or composite materials that have specific superconductive properties. And don't forget the coils in the calutrons used at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to enhance uranium diring World War 2. They were made of silver that was borrowed by the ton from reserves at Fort Knox!

By and large, most transformers we encounter will be wound with pure copper wire. It might be worth noting that recycled copper is not generally used to make copper wire as it is not pure enough. Virgin copper is generally the best choice for electrical wire, and recycled copper works very well for copper pipes and copper tubing.

Does a 3 phase motor starter with a 120 volt coil need a neutral to the coil?

Usually for this type of installation there is a control transformer installed in the starter enclosure. The primary of the transformer is the motors line voltage and the secondary is the control voltage which is usually 120 volts. In Canada the control transformer needs fusing on the secondary side of the transformer. In the US the transformer needs fusing on the primary and secondary sides of the transformer. The secondary side of the transformer's terminals are labeled X1 and X2. The X2 lead is grounded to the starter's enclosure. From this point out the wire is then termed the circuit's neutral wire. This wire then connects to one side of the magnetic starters draw in coil. Yes, 120 volt coil would require a neutral, this could be derived from the control transformer if it has one or from an external source.

Why is primary coil in step up transformer thick?

A step up transformer converts low voltage, high amperage current to a high voltage, low amperage current. It requires large diameter wire to carry the high amperage in the primary coil.

Contains both resistance and inductance?

Wire. conductors. Wire made into a coil, an inductor.

What is principle of Current transformer?

why does have to short-circuit secondary wire of current transformer ?

How do you wire a single phase 480 volt starter with a photo cell for lights?

You will not be able to use the line voltage to operate the photocell directly as the photo cell is usually rated for 120 volts or in some instances 240 volts. You will need a step down transformer 480 to 120 volts. The starter will also need to have a 120 volt coil. The black and white wire of the photo cell connects to the output of the transformer and the red wire from the photocell goes to the starter coil. From the neutral terminal of the transformer a wire is taken to the other terminal on the starter coil. The transformer should be about 50 VA.As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician to advise what work is needed. Before you do any work yourself,on electrical circuits, equipment or appliancesalways use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY SURE YOU CAN DO THIS JOBSAFELY AND COMPETENTLYREFER THIS WORK TO QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS.

What is the difference between transformer and reactor?

A transformer is composed of two coils and wrapped around a core while a reactor is made up of one coil of wire. A transformer is used to increase or decrease the amount of current while a reactor is used to isolate circuits from a noisy background.

What type of substance would you use as a heating coil in an electric toaster?

Nichrome wire. An alloy of Nickel and Chromium.

If a transformer has 1000 turns of wire in the primary coil and 50 turns in the secondary coil if the input voltage is 2400 V what is the output voltage?

120 v

Why ac current is used in a transformer?

AC current or DC current can be used in transformers. A transformer is made of two coils of wire, the input coil induces a current into the output coil. Transformers change the voltage either up (step up transformer) or down (step down transformer). The amount of change in voltage is dependent solely on the number of windings in both coils in the transformer. DC transformers work exactly the same way AC transformers do.

What are slinky's made from?

Its made of coil of wire or plastic sometimes

How does step down transfomers work?

A transformer has two coils of wire wound round an iron core. An ac voltage on one coil produces a magnetic field in the core. The magnetic field causes a voltage to be induced in the second coil. A step-down transformer has fewer wire turns in the second coil, therefore the output voltage is less than the input voltage.

What size ground wire for a 30 kva transformer?

The size of grounding wire is based on the amperage output of the transformer. The voltage of the transformer needs to be stated. Without this voltage a calculation can not be made. Amps = Watts/Volts = 30000/?.

The commonly used Safety fuse wires is made of?

Could be a lot of metals depending on how old it is. A coil of fuse wire hasn't been used in North America for over 50 years.
