The word 'freakin' is not a swear word in itself. It's an incorrect pronunciation of 'freaking', the present participle of the verb freak (not the noun). As a verb, freak means to react or behave in a wild and irrational way, typically because of the effects of extreme emotion, mental illness, or drugs; to cause to act in such a way.

As a word, how it's used is what would make it seem like a swear word, like the British use of 'bloody'. 'He has a bloody nose.' or 'She's freakin' over her credit card bill.' Neither of these uses are swearing.

The problem arises when ignorant speakers use the shortened form of freaking as an adjective, along with other words, to form an offensive phrase or sentence. 'Designed to offend' is what can make any word into a swear word.
