The panhead design for Harley Davidson started in 1948. It replaced the engine by Knucklehead. In 1965, it was replaced by what is known as a shovelhead.
The last model year for the shovelhead engine was 1984. It was produced concurrently with the new Evolution big twin that entire model year.
A Harley Shovelhead engine is unique in the way it leaves the engine without a cover and instead uses rocker arms and rocker boxes. As well as a unique look it enabled the bikes have 10% more horsepower than pan head engines.
