You may want to unplug it from the wall outlet, pull the battery pack, and hold the power button down for 10 seconds to totally discharge the unit. Then replace the battery pack, plug the unit back in, and power it back up.

First of all, the battery has to still be in the DS to charge it. Don't ever take it out.
