In September 2011, a resolution was passed by the Government of Jharkhand, recommending to the Govt of India to convert ISM to IIT.[5] In June 2012, the Planning Commission, on a reference to it from the Union Cabinet on this issue, favoured this conversion during the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-2017).[6] ISM Dhanbad with the approval of its Finance Committee, Executive Board and General Council has forwarded the proposal for its conversion into an IIT.The approval on 'Conversion of ISM Dhanbad into an IIT' is an agenda item for the meeting of the council of the IITs to be held on January 7, 2013.[7][8] It may be noted that for this, a Bill will have to be introduced in Parliament by the Union HRD Minister.Students and the faculty had launched a campaign in 2010 for upgrading ISM to an IIT and had submitted memorandum to the Jharkhand governor in 2010.The students had sought support of local MP P N Singh and obtained support of about 200 MPs of both the Houses. The Jharkhand government had also recommended conversion of ISM into an IIT last year.
