The Battle of Hastings in 1066, wasn't fought in Hastings. It was fought eight miles north of Hastings at Senlac Hill on the site of where the town of Battle is now. William the Conqueror, built a large church to celebrate his victory over the Anglo-Saxon army and called it Battle Abbey. A town developed close to the Abbey and was named after the Abbey.
