The CTO is responsible for the company's technology, but again is probably not technical as its typically a 100% management role. The Chief Architect is probably the best paid technical role. Alternatively if there is a demand for a specialist skill which is in short supply then those skills can demand very high salaries. Very new and old technologies are usually the areas where there are insufficient skills available.
