Well, being a prior Army Officer I will say that *some* of my superior officers, especially those that held 'Command' related positions, thought they could do no wrong. These once good and selfless men often fell victim to what I can only call the 'Ego-maniacal rank-makes-me-God' syndrome. Tendencies which arose our of that particular command structured officer being deified by some of the lesser rank and file who felt that somehow feeding this officer's ego meant certain promotion or special favors for themselves (and for some, it actually did).

The fact that no one could challenge their decisions (save for the few higher ranking officers above them) meant these fellows let the rank get to the their head an effectively considered themselves rock stars.

Mind you, this did not make the officer any more efficient, brilliant, effective or better a leader merely, it just made him think he was. I felt that in review and retrospect, after my 20 years in, that these types of officers were of the most dangerous of individuals and often got many a good soldier needlessly killed with their stupid and self absorbed/aggrandizing decision making.

Any good psychotherapist would deem most of these types narcissistic by any standard of the DSM-IV. Mind you, NOT all senior officers fell victim to this particular disease but those that did were very very dangerous individuals and very difficult to stop once they steamrolled their ego onto the battlefield. The sad thing is the Army top brass always found a way to sweep their misdeeds and selfish actions under the carpet to save themselves the bad press in an all volunteer organization. Sad.
