About Mounds Pet Food Warehouse, Inc.

Mounds is a locally owned and operated pet supply store with five convenient locations throughout south central Wisconsin. Our staff is the most knowledgeable and dedicated in the area, always willing to go the extra mile for our customers, by placing special orders, assisting with loading a purchase, and by offering expert and friendly advice on all of your pet questions. Our motto is, "If we don't know the answer, we'll find out".

Mounds works in partnership with local humane societies and rescue organizations to find homes for animals who need them. Each store has its own Humane Society Satellite Adoption Center, where you can receive information about adopting a new pet, and meet adoptable animals.

Mounds hosts several events each year to raise awareness about the animals in our communities. We are committed to reducing overpopulation, and therefore do not sell animals at any of our stores - instead, we refer you to rescue organizations and humane societies for adoption alternatives, as well as local kennel clubs for referrals to reputable breeders. See our Links page for a list of pet adoption resources.

Mounds publishes a newsletter each month dedicated to providing helpful information that benefits animals and their guardians. You'll find invaluable advice in our "Ask the Vet" section, and our "Employee of the Month", "Warm Fuzzy Award", and Mounds Pet Food "Success Story" sections feature folks in our communities doing good things for the benefit of animals.

Our customers, both human and animal, are important to us - feel free to bring your dog along when you shop at Mounds. We have treats at the registers for our four-legged shoppers, and a free Mounds candy bar for our two-legged customers!

Ken Mack, Founder, Mounds Pet Food Warehouse

History of Mounds Pet Food Warehouse

Ken Mack, a 1963 University of Wisconsin graduate, began his professional career as a District Sales Manager for the Ralston Purina Company. It was during Ken's ten-year period with Ralston Purina that he founded Mounds Agri Service, a livestock company, in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin.

By 1974, Mounds Agri Service was growing so rapidly that Ken left Purina to focus on his own company. He moved the business to an old rented warehouse in downtown Middleton. By 1976, Mounds Agri Service had outgrown the old warehouse, so Ken purchased a vacant lot on Highway 14 and began a steady program of building the mill facilities that exist today, known as Randan Agri Service.

Mounds Agri Service was originally a farm store, designed to accommodate nearby farming communities. Along with the manufacture of farm feeds and fertilizers, which was its primary business, Mounds Agri Service also offered a few pet food products. By 1984, the farm store was devoted entirely to pet food and supplies due to high demand. Ken began selling private label products - Dog Power, PurrFect Cat, Horse Power, and various wild bird seeds. These products helped the company stay competitive and profitable when larger national chain pet supply stores came to the Madison area.

In 1991, Ken opened another pet food and supply store location on South Stoughton Road, on Madison's east side. This store grew so rapidly that in 1993, a 15,000 square-foot Mounds Pet Food Warehouse was built at its present location on Stoughton Road. New Mounds Pet Food Warehouses soon followed; Middleton in 1994, Janesville in 1996, Fitchburg in 1997, and Sun Prairie in 2006.

In 1999, determined to keep Mounds privately held and locally owned, Ken sold a portion of the business to Mounds management staff members Mary Jansma and Tim Walton. When Ken Mack passed away on March 15, 2000, Tim and Mary became President and Vice President of Mounds, respectively, and presently continue to uphold Ken's dedication to outstanding customer service and superior products.

Additionally, Mary and Tim are committed to Mounds' employees, customers, their pets, and the community at large. Mounds employees are provided with thorough customer relations and product knowledge training, thus ensuring that Mounds offers a level of service which creates loyal, satisfied customers.

How pedigree got its name?

Pedigree is both the company name and a brand line name of dog food sold in the United States and several other countries. The name was likely chosen to emphasize an interaction between the dog food and the bloodline of the dogs that eat the food. However, Pedigree is not just for purebred dogs - it is a well-rounded commercial diet formulated for all dogs (including mixed breed dogs) that are family pets or amateur show dogs.
