England is not in a seismically active part of the world, so earthquakes are relatively infrequent, and generally small. Although some hundreds are detected by the British Geological Survey each year, few are large enough to be felt at the surface. Compare this with the 15,000 detected annually by GNS Science in New Zealand, of which 150 are large enough to be felt.

The largest UK event in recent times was a magnitude 5.2 event on 27 February, 2008, centred on Market Rasen. This caused some damage in the epicentric area, but no deaths.

The largest officially recorded was the Magnitude 6.1 event, centred on the Dogger Bank in 1931, which caused damage throughout eastern England.

The most recent, at the time of writing, was a magnitude 3.5 event centred in the Scottish Highlands on 23 January 2011. Although it was felt throughout the highland area there was little significant damage.
