Each cartridge includes a Flash memory or EEPROM that contains all identification and status information (e.g. color, serial number, capacity, usage). The printer reads this memory to find out what is installed and updates it periodically to track toner remaining estimates, problems encountered, etc. It only requires a few electrical contacts on the cartridge as the memory is accessed serially.
