From 1775 to the present (January 2010), there have been 34 Commandants of the Marine Corps. The first Commandant of the Marine Corps was Samuel Nichols. Complete every available correspondence course the Marine Corps offers. Attend every available A school that you can qualify for and consistently complete it with honors. Add at least two foreign languages that the Corps is in desperate need of to your list of qualifications. Gain at least an Associates Degree on your own. Apply for Warrant Officer School.

For brass and winds, sight reading is a major part of the audition; for percussion there is an emphasis on snare, including rudiments, prepared solos, and sight reading. "The President's Own" Marine Band has a tougher audition process, and only holds auditions in anticipation of a specific vacancy.

There are approximately 50 Navy and Marine Corps officers (the Navy MOH is awarded to both Navy and Marines Corps members) who have been awarded the Navy MOH since 1861. The most recent Naval officer to receive the MOH was Navy SEAL Lieutenant Michael Murphy, who was killed in action during Operation Red Wings in Afghanistan.
