How can I find out if my brother was awarded a Silver Star while serving in Viet Nam? There is no definitive list of silver star recipients. There are lists available if you do an internet search, but they are not complete or verified. If you want to find information on medals or awards given to a particular service member, you can request those records through the National Archives if you are the service member or a next of kin. Here is a link. http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/get-service-records.html
There are some incomplete lists available on the websites; those are voluntary contributions. The Bronze Star is fairly low on the list & can be awarded for Meritorious Achievement, in addition to Valor. If the Bronze Star is awarded for Valor, it must have the "V" device attached to the cloth portion of the medal; or upon the ribbon. The MOH (Medal of Honor) is the common listing available for the public (the nation's highest medal).
Inquire with, "The American War Library", they might be able to help.

While the Silver Star itself was created in 1932, the Citation Star, created in 1918, was its predecessor. Veterans of World War I were eligible to convert the Citation Star, if awarded, to the Silver Star. I know because my grandfather converted his Citation Star for Gallantry in Action to the Silver Star. However, the U.S. government kept very poor official records on this award and you may have trouble finding your WWI veteran's name on a list of recipients.
There is no Comprehensive list in existence. A primary reason for this many black ops conducted by the United States in countries where we were never officially there. Awards that were earned by operators will never be available. That would be proof of illegal activity by the United States.
Medal of Honor? Distingushed Fyling Cross? Silver Star? Bronze Star? Purple Heart? What medal are you wanting to know about?
