"Tiernan" is actually a name that's been adapted from the Gaelic - in which it's something more like "tigher-nun." I wouldn't expect more people to recognize it from the Anglicized version of the name. It actually means "lord" or "master" but is also considered synonymous with the Trinity and another word for "God" (thus the "lord or master translation, as well). You'd have to be able to research it in the Gaelic to find it, I'm sure.
