There are a number of places you can consult to find catalog prices, see the links below.
The Gibbons site is providing catalog prices, usually Fine to Very Fine condition. If you were to want to sell, you would only be able to get a fraction of that, usually around 25%, for the lower end items (under $100) and higher as you go up in value. Dealers don't normally deal with small value single copies.
Note that the commercial sites are offering stamps for sale at these prices.

∙ 12y agoYou can obtain some estimations through catalogs of places offering stamps for sale. They are not going to provide all the details of identification to determine just what stamp you are looking at. Mystic Stamp Company has an online catalog that is a starting point for US stamps. The stamp section of eBay can help as well, but you have to be careful. There are items there I can buy for a dime that are being sold for over a dollar there.
There are too many factors that go into identifying an older stamp, such as 'grills, watermarks, secret marks, types, cancellations, on envelope, off envelope, error, perfin, BEP, paper, double paper, etc. Then you have to grade the stamp accurately. As a start it would be better to purchase 'Scott Specialized Catalog of US Stamps 2011'. There is a section in the catalog that gives you the approximate value of older stamps according to their GRADE (pages 305 - 348)
Note: Damage to a stamp decreases the value.
