Is there a way to create a center speaker in a 2 channel surround system?

If you use a surround sound receiver that let you define the numbers of channels, set it for 2.0 or 2.1 if you have a sub. The center channel audio will be mixed into the left and right speakers.

I have a stereo receiver with four channel speakers and a subwoofer is there a way I can have the two front channels as regular sound speakers and the two rear channels as surround affect speakers?
If the receiver is just stereo, not surround sound, you will not be able to create a surround sound (front, centre, sub, surround) setup.

Dolby Digital is a surround format that is quite common for DVDs, HD broadcasts and some television shows. It has 5 discrete channels of audio (3 front, 2 back, 1 sub) that create a durround environment with each speaker independantly producing a separate sound.
