I am 11 years old, and have Asperger's Syndrome. I am going to a special needs camp, and I have befriended a girl with Down Syndrome. I have learned so much from Melanie, and she has learned a lot from me too. I have learned, when I'm trying to get her to do something that the counselors want her to do, instead of yelling or threatning her, I encourage her, and get her excited to do the thing. And then, I offer to go with her. Therefore, she gets a reward by doing it, but I don't bribe her with material things. Instead, she gets the reward of not having a time out and of spending some time with her best friend, even if it's only 2 or 3 minutes.

What are the disadvantages of diagnosing a child with disabilities?

Down syndrome is a common genetic variation which usually causes delay in physical, intellectual and language development. The exact causes of the chromosomal rearrangement and primary prevention of Down syndrome are currently unknown. Down syndrome is one of the leading clinical causes of cognitive delay in the world - it is not related to race, nationality, religion or socio-economic status. There are approximately 1/4 million families in the United States affected by Down syndrome. There is wide variation in mental abilities, behavior and physical development in individuals with Down syndrome. Each individual has his/her own unique personality, capabilities and talents. We just don't know, at an early age, in exactly which ways Down syndrome may affect a child. She may be really good at cognitive activities, but have significant delays in movement… thereby falling behind her peers in playground and paper-and-pencil activities. He may be fairly good at gross motor, excelling in sports. Ocular control may be an area of need, or may be perfect. Language may be good, or may need lots of work. However, one thing we know for certain… babies are are babies first...the most important things that parents of babies with Down syndrome can do are exactly those things that all parents do. You know: they cuddle, feed, sing and love. In adulthood, many persons with Down syndrome hold jobs, live independently and enjoy recreational opportunities in their communities. ndsccenter.org/wp-content/uploads//2010/10/firstcall_new_final.pdf

If you are 17 and you have a child can you move out of your parents house?

It depends on the state that you live in. If the state allows it, then you could consider emancipation, which means you prove to the court that you are capable of acting as a responsible adult. Emancipation also requires that you hold a job that can provide for your (and your child's) needs.

What are the pros and cons of giving up your Down syndrome baby for adoption?

The Ups 'n Downs of Giving Up Your Down Syndrome BabyWikiAnswers contributors share their thoughts on this sensitive topic:Although the pain, suffering, and regret of giving up a child are DEFINITELY cons, if the baby has not yet been born, then you don't know if the baby really had down syndrome. Many people I've been in contact with were supposed to be "mentally challenged," but turned out to be just as mentally sharp as the rest of us.Being the religion I am, I honestly think this is very wrong to even think about giving up your child, just because of his/her mental disability. If you are struggling financially, this may be a smart idea, because you would want your child to live a happy life. So, that would be a pro, but a con, like mentioned above, is the regret you'd feel just because you gave your baby up. No matter what the condition, I believe it to be very, very wrong for you to give a child away because of a struggle you may face ahead. These "different people" are not aliens. They are normal people with a soul and heart. If you help and support, they can lead a very fulfilling and normal life. Please take this to heart and think VERY carefully, because once you give the child up, you won't get him/her back.- Losing the love of your child, who would love and adore you more honestly and openly than any "normal" child. - Not learning to accept a person, no matter their faults.- Not learning the true meaning of parenting; doing the best you can for each of your children so they can reach their full potential.- Forever regretting your decision. In the real world, keeping a Down's syndrome child would be a heavy burden unless you have a lot of money like Sarah Palin. If you are in the US, the social services system has been so limited by political ideologues that you can't expect much help from the government. Do you have a close family that can help with this child? Would you be able to work if you had to? Are you a single mom? All of these things have to be considered in the real world. The religious are more worried about a fetus than caring and spending money on underprivileged children that are already living amongst us, so take their advice with a grain of salt. (As evidenced by their strong support of Republican political views)

Will Disney characters hold small children?

No, characters are not allowed to hold children. Their costumes often make it hard to see or move and there is the possibility that the child could be accidentally dropped. If you want your young child to take pictures with Disney characters, you should carry them or have the child stand (most characters can kneel down to a kid's level).
