of course there is. Dont ask me what the name of the chemicals are but i collect gold coins and 2 years ago started buying jewelry also. After a while i asked myself if there were not a way that i could myself separate the gold from the other metals so as to have the pure gold on one side and the rest on the other. On the internet for about 800dollars was a system that came with the chemicals one would need and in the end the pure gold would be in what seemed to be white pellets which would then need to be melted down again if you wanted to make little bars out ofd them. You know that 8k,9k,10k, 14karat, 18karat gold only means .333.....375.....415.....585....750 parts of 1000 are pure gold. So if you have a ring that weighs 10 gramms and is stamped 14karat gold or in other words 585 gold that meanas that of those 10 gramms 5.85grams are pure gold and the rest another metal. If that same ring were stamped 18karat or 750 gold it would be 7.5gramms of pure gold. But to get back to your question, yes, one can separate the metals at home without having to send the jewelry in.

Stainless steel is a metal that is highly resistant to rust and corrosion in water due to its chromium content, which forms a protective oxide layer on its surface. This oxide layer acts as a barrier, preventing water and oxygen from reaching the underlying metal and causing rust.

No, gold is a softer type of metal. Its easily dented and scratched, but they add other minerals that make it stronger gold before they will make necklaces, watches, ect. That's why they have the Karats for gold. The higher the number of K's the more easily gold tends to dent and whatnot.
Elements that cannot be extracted by heating with carbon include those that are more reactive than carbon, such as the alkali metals and alkaline earth metals. These elements require more powerful reducing agents for extraction, such as electrolysis.
