So if you have a ring that weighs 10 gramms and is stamped 14karat gold or in other words 585 gold that meanas that of those 10 gramms 5.85grams are pure gold and the rest another metal. If that same ring were stamped 18karat or 750 gold it would be 7.5gramms of pure gold. But to get back to your question, yes, one can separate the metals at home without having to send the jewelry in.
