As with most animals, there is always a leader. For Dolphins (and all cetaceans), it is hard to determine what constitutes that leadership. Males designate their leader simply by who is the toughest, typical right. They will fight each other through bitting and pushing, while also hitting each other with their flukes, called tail slapping. Female dolphins follow a strict matriarchal line, so the dominate female is usually the oldest, but that is not always the case.
Researchers and scientists don't really know for 100% what all goes into leading the pods, but they have been able to observe a bit through captivity and the through observation while the Cetacea are at the surface.
A pod is the group in which a dolphin travels in.
There isn't a specific kind of dolphin that is in charge of the pod or a leader in the pod.
It is normally the female matriarch that leads a pod of orca whales.
