Yes - there are two types used in heavy duty commercial trucks. The first type is a true automatic, with a torque converter. These are primarily made by Allison, and more commonly seen on vehicles operating locally. These transmissions range from 5 to 7 gears. The other type is what's known as an automated manual transmission - the same gearbox as a manual transmission, but the shifter, bumping up the accelerator on downshifting, and the clutch are all automated. These are pretty much exclusive to tractor-trailers which are road bound (off-road units would use the Allison automatic).

You would need to specify which transmission you have. On the older autoshifts with the clutch pedal, you could override the automatic function to get it to downshift manually, but you couldn't override it on the upshift. Some of the modern clutch free automatics have a feature which allows you to do this.
Usually, it won't go into gear. If you get it into gear, you could cause serious damage to the transmission.
