The best way to make chainmail would depend on your weave.

I use European 4-in-1 (which is probably the easiest), and i use various techniques.

You can purchase wiring at Home Depot where the concrete items are held ($5).

You can make a rig, which consists of a metal rod, some wood, and a drill (Google it)

(I personally made a rig out of a fireplace broom with a hole drilled through.)

Then, wrap the wire around like a spring on the rig.

Take off

Cut the individual rings (i cut in the same space to get even rings)

Then, comes the important part. The weaving.

There are several methods to weave.

(I call them):

Strip technique

Add-on technique

The hanging technique

Before the techniques: learn how 4-in-1 works. (I Googled for several days before i started.)

Strip Technique

Make a 4-in-1, add on with the 2-in-1, and repeat until you've aquired desired length. (If you are making a shirt, measure your body's width and go by that.)

Then, make another strip the same length.

Repeat until you have desired height.

Now, look at your strips, you have to line up the patterns.

((((((((((((((

))))))))))))))

(((((((((((((( This is what you're looking for.

What you will do, is attach two similar strips with individual rings.

How this is done is by this: 4-in-1 theory: FOR EVERY 4 RINGS, THERE IS 1 IN THE MIDDLE.

((((((((((((((

))))))))))))))

((((((((((((((

))))))))))))))

((((((((((((((

))))))))))))))

((((((((((((((

Hard to show over text, but here is the idea.

Then, from that, connect sheets of chainmail in the same way.

Add On Technique

Remember when i mentioned adding 2-in-1's? That's it...

A tip when doing this is studying the direction of rings

(((( (

)))) )

(((( If you have this, ( add this like this.

Again, hard to show like this...

Hanging technique

(What i use)

Take a strip of chainmail and lie it down.

Take a string or a small sturdy pole and stick it through the very top row.

____(((((((_____

)))))))

((((((( Like this.

Then, take the individual rings, and add then to two rings.

(((((((((

)^ those two.

On some rows, you'll have two add one to one ring to keep it even, or it will start getting narrow like a triangle.

Tip, when weaving, look at the direction of rings.

(((((((((

If like this: start on this side > and weave to the left.

Well, there you go.

Hope it helped. If not, YouTube this. Youtube has very good examples.

Also Google chainmail techniques, and you'll find good ways.

I will actually make my own tutorial on my site, and will post it once it's done.

What was the material to make a ancient roman soldier's unform?

Wool was used for the tunics and cloaks. A quilted woolen under-tunic was sometimes worn beneath the soldier's armor. Metal, in segments or in chain mail was used for the armor, metal for the helmet, leather for the boots. Soft wool was used for the neck scarf used to prevent the armor from chaffing the neck.

Who would win between knights or thai warriors?

Easy question, Knights. If you are talking about the French Knight, their armor is far superior. Even if the Thai warrior were to make it through a quarter inch of steel, he also had to worry about the chain mail. So even if the Thai is able to endure longer than the knight, he'll just lose all of his strength pounding on his armor to no avail, and eventually the knight will regain his strength and send a punishing blow to he weakly armored Thai Warrior.

When was chain armor first made in?

Protecting oneself in battle was an absolute must, especially for the knight classes who could be called upon at a moment's notice to rally behind their liege. The history of medieval armor truly begins with chain, but this was a luxury reserved for the wealthy. Other forms of armor, less effective of course, were worn on the field of battle by warriors and peasants alike prior to its rise in popularity and even long after. For those who could not afford chain, leather and cloth padded armor was often the only means of protection available. The history of medieval armor is marred by the simple fact that finding high quality metals to make effective armor and weapons was sometimes difficult due to low quality iron reserves. Bog iron, found in parts of Europe, was not as strong and supple as more pure reserves in other parts of the world. Since the metals used in chain were often substandard, and were always expensive to have worked, leather and cloth do hold their place in the history of medieval armor. Despite its drawbacks, chain armor entered the history of medieval armor with a bang. This type of armor involved thousands of interlocking rings woven together to form pieces of a suit such as the tunic or headpiece. Chain worked well to deflect slicing blows, such as those from the edge of a sword and thus earned its place in the history of medieval armor. Chain also earned its place in the history of medieval armor for its ability to move with its wearer. Though difficult to make and hard to don and remove, the heavy links and separate pieces worked well together with leather or cloth armor to provide adequate protection to the knight classes. The history of medieval armor does show, however, that chain had some serious weaknesses. Arrows could sometimes make the mark and pierce through the layers of protection by finding just the right angle. Also shown in the history of medieval armor was the fact there were weak spots in between the pieces of chain. If a sword, axe or even arrow found the gap between the armor, the wearer would rue the day his opponent practiced aim. As chain made its mark on the history of medieval armor, so too did plate. Plate began to make its appearance around the 13th and 14th centuries. This armor was at first used to protect vital areas such as the chest. Eventually the use of plate evolved into complete suits, perhaps the most famous image from the history of medieval armor. Plate was used in the history of medieval armor in conjunction with chain oftentimes, since as with its woven counterpart, plate was very expensive. The two combined protected a knight well, but with the advent of gunpowder in the next centuries, it too became ineffective. It was a time of battle and warfare on many fronts, from the crusades to infighting among nobles. Inasmuch as the history of the Middle Ages is rich and wondrous, so too is the history of medieval armor. The armor that was made in 1400 to the 1500 was unimportant when gunpowder came to its own, the knights armor was not strong enough to protect against the gunpowder, this came in unhandy against guns.

Why do people make chainmails?

Chainmail (aka: chainmaille, chain mail, chain maille, maille or mail) was a highly successful type of armor, and was used by nearly every metalworking culture in North Africa, Europe, and Asia. Its use spans from around 300 BC to the dawn of the 20th century and beyond, a period of over 2500 years. Today it remains in limited use in stab vests and a number of other applications. It is also used in reenactments, decorative uses and jewelry. that's the main history but people make it for fun like i have been mailing for several years now.
