The first choice you have to make is what tuning you are going to use. The most common is the G'CEA with a high G, meaning the C is actually the lowest note. You can also get a set of them with a fairly common GCEA, and there are a number of less common tunings.

There are many types of strings and they all have their fans. You may have to experiment with different strings and find the type that you like and that sound best on your Ukulele.

Aquila Nylgut strings get good reviews and I have them on five of my ukuleles.

I have Martins on two of my vintage ukuleles.

Jake Shimabukuro and Aldrine Gerraro use D'Addario strings.

And the individual ukulele may work better with one type over another. That you will have to figure out on your own.

How does the ukulele produce sound?

When the strings of the ukulele are plucked or strummed the vibrations transfer to the front of the ukulele through the bridge and the nut vibrating the neck and hollow body of the instrument. The sound hole on the front of the body helps to project the tone of the ukulele outward making it more easily heard. The larger the ukulele the space for resonance and louder the projection. A soprano ukulele would be much quieter than a tenor ukulele even though both are tuned to the same notes.

How do you know what size strings for an ukulele?

You need to determine the size of your ukulele. It is determined by measuring the length between the nut to the bridge of the instrument. The video linked below show you how to measure and what sizes they are.If you know what size of ukulele it is and what tuning you will be using then there's no real problem, string makers indicate on the packet (or in advertising) what size the strings are designed to fit. You also need to make sure that the set you acquire has the proper strings for your tuning, such as Low G or High GIf in any doubt the best thing to do is take your instrument to a music store that sells ukuleles, they should also sell strings.WARNING fitting the wrong strings can seriously damage the instrument.

Can you tune your mandolin strings to a guitar tuning?

YesI am a ukulele player and I am going to get a Mandolin. I tune all my ukes to C tuning gcea..even my Baritone uke. I cant see why, when I buy that mandolin, I cant tune the same WITHOUT BUYING MORE STRINGS.ALL STRINGS STAY WHERE THEY ARE EXCEPT YOU SWAP THE TOP 4 STRINGS.ALL STRINGS ARE EITHER THE EXACT RIGHT ONES, or are just one note out! The steel strings can be tuned then to match GCEA without any stress, or tight strings. This way you dont have to learn new chord patterns and I dont think you miss out on any special sound that the mandolin has to offer. I am not an expert- but it makes sense to me ;especially if you are old and dont HAVE to learn a whole bunch of new chords.
