If the filter is on too tight and you cant get a good grip, stab it with a screwdriver and twist it off. Its messy but it really works.

Been there, at the parts store they have an adjustable filter wrench, or more appropriately pliers that will do the job nicely, they look like a very large set of slip joint pliers.

Any shop does not bother because it takes extra time to pre-fill the oil filter , but I always liked to do that if I was changing the oil ( just remember to pour that much less oil into the engine )
