The pulse oxymeter can only measure O2 saturation of the digit it's attached to, which we hope is reflective of the body's overall saturation level. If there's no blood flow to that digit, the oxymeter's readout will not correctly reflect the overall body O2 saturation. To get that, you should either reconnect the meter to another digit that has circulation, or consider another means of measuring this (like an ABG line). Because blood saturation is based on the patient's metabolism, which in turn is based on about two gazillion factors (weight, circulatory efficiency, ejection fraction, etc. etc.), such an equation would be murderous to come up with, and considering the number of variables, useless in the clinical environment. So the answer is no. Once circulation to the digit you're metering stops, the readout gets more and more out of line with the actual body PPO2 every second that passes.

How bad is the number 74 on an oxymeter?

A pulse oximeter is a device that measures the percentage of oxygen in the arterial hemoglobin. The normal range of oxygen saturation (o2sat) is 95%-100%. A low o2sat can lead to hypoxemia (decreased oxygen in the blood)

What is the function of oximeter?

The pulse oximeter (or oxymeter) measure the oxygen saturation of hemoglobin. If the hemoglobin levels are normal this will give an estimate of how much oxygen is being delivered to the tissues and if abnormal can suggest lung or heart disease.

How are oxygen levels measured?

Oxygen levels in the blood are measured with a pulse oxymeter that measures by shining a light through the finger tip, with or blood gas tests run in a laboratory. Lab could be venous or arterial, usually arterial.

What could scientists measure or observe to find out how well babies sleep?

"Rapid Eye Movement" is typically observed as a basic determinant of deep sleep. Aditionally, an EEG can be used to measure T-wave output. An oxymeter is used to determine oxygenation of the blood, and an EKG is used to minitor heart rate and pulse. Any and all of these can be used to determine how well a baby sleeps.

How is oxygen measured in pulse oximetry?

Medically, measuring Oxygen Saturation is termed Oximetry due to the use of a pulse oximeter which uses infra red light to and spectrophotometry based principles to estimate the level of O2 bound to haemoglobin in the blood when sat on a peripheral extremity such as the toe, finger or nose.
