There is neither a co-op mode or online mode for Mass Effect 2
Mass Effect 2 is only a single player game. Mass Effect 3 however has provided a multiplayer function to it.

The original Mass Effect will never be released for the PS3. The PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 is not going to include any co-op or multiplayer because Mass Effect 2 does not support these functions.

If by Xbox Live you mean Multiplayer then no. There is no online Multiplayer for Mass Effect 2. ME2 is strictly a single player game. But, you can be connected to Xbox Live and get exclusive offers and DLC's via the XBL Marketplace, that are hard to pass up (if you can pay the price for them :P)
Yes! Mass Effect 3 has its own Multiplayer Co=op Wave Mode.
Mass Effect 3 campaign is only single player in itself. You can however play online with other people by using it's multiplayer functions.
Depends on if you want a multiplayer experience or an adventure type game. Personally, I preferred Battlefield 3, but Mass Effect has been out for a while so you can probably get it cheaper.
Not in the main game, however in Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer one is free to play an alien race assuming it has been unlocked
If he died in Mass Effect 1 then he is not in Mass Effect 2. If he survived Mass Effect 1 he shows up in Mass Effect 2 but he can not be killed.
