Yes. In many ways, they are more racist than people in outher countries. Mostly, they are not violent racists, rather, they are exclusionary racists - meaning that they like to exclude other races from participation in activities, etc. in Japan.

Japan has many race-based policies, laws. The general attitude of the people is not much different. Most Japanese people think that they are unique and/or special in the world. Along with unique, many Japanese people think Japanese people are racially superior to other races.

In America, a person of Japanese descent is called an American, or a Japanese-American.

Conversely, in Japan, a person whose great grandfather was Korean, IS STILL Korean - and is segregated in school and work. Being born in Japan and speaking Japanese means nothing if your ancestors came from somewhere else.

In Japan, the propoganda/indoctrination begins early, and never stops.

From elementary school, kids are taught to treat different races differently.

They are taught that Japan has 4 seasons (uh, don't we all?), therefore, Japan has 4 times the variety of food as in other countries. Therefore, the Japanese palate (as well as brain) is more sophisticated and advanced.

The Japanese language is so hard, ONLY Japanese people can truly understand it...

Japanese people compare themselves to "foreigners" - so they are a minority in the world (there are 130 million Japanese vs. 7 billion "foreigners"

In middle and high school, foreigners (including the many 3rd and 4th generation Koreans, Chinese, etc.)cannot participate in some athletics. Since 2008, foreign exchange students have been banned from the starting leg of the Tokyo to Hakone ekiden (marathon relay race). The reason given for the ban was that the foreigners (mostly Kenyan exchange students enrolled in Japanese Universities) tended to win, and this was boring for the Japanese audience. So the average Japanese spectator is not interested in the best athlete, only the best JAPANESE athlete.

There are signs in some businesses throughout Japan sayng "no foreigners" or "Japanese only". When confronted, most Japanese people will excuse these as cultural misunderstandings, NOT RACISM. Because, they say, there is no racism in Japan.

As of this writing, there are NO;

Non-Japanese race policemen in Japan,

Non-Japanese race soldiers in the Japanese military

Yes, institutional racism is alive and well in Japan in 2010!
