Well they are not called sweetners, they are called flavoring agents.

The idea is to make you like the idea of brushing your teeth.

If the main ingredients of tooth paste were all put together and made into paste without a flavouring agent, you wouldn't want to touch it with a pole!

To give you an idea of how it would taste, listen to this; the main ingredients are chalk, soap, antiseptic, emulsifiers ......... well you know how THAT's going to taste:)
