No. The only truth is that somoene wanted to make a cheesy Horror film based on an equally cheesy book, so, as is often done with horror films, they did. In the sequel (the 2007 sequel to the remade film, not the 1984 sequel to the original) you get to see some of the most inept portrayals of soldiers ever, as well.
