On a 1.8 petrol xsara Picasso the oil filter is underneath the engine in the middle towards the front. The air filter is in a little box held by (3?) screws on the front right of the engine compartment.
Air filter is on the right hand side of engine bay.Undo 4 screws on black cover at end of air inlet duct .

When you accelerate hard you are injecting a lot of fuel into the engine. Not all of this fuel will burn efficiently which results in a lot of soot being generated, you will see this as a black plume behind you. If your filters are old and blocked they will reduce the amount of air getting into the engine so again you get an inefficient burn. Badly maintained taxis are good at generating soot like this...
