Yes but it's rare. I would suggest use an antivirus that is efficient and powerful, as well as free, use AVG Antivirus Free Edition 2011 'coz it allows you to stay protected on social networks and enjoy a faster running PC.
EDIT:
Well, I happen to have got that virus one time. Its called AntiVirus 2010. It SAYS its a virus killing program, but when you run it, its actually downloading a HUGE virus. It wouldn't let me use AdAware or anything!!
EDIT:
actually its not so rare antivirus 2010 is one of many programs called "rogues" rogues are a fake antivirus that may install itself without any given consent and if not its just downloaded by the user and installed
also rogues can do things like disable command prompt and task manager
Not easily.
EDIT: Yes, a virus is very capable of disabling anti-virus software. Some virus will even crash your computer if you attempt to access your anti-virus programs to run a scan.
You can attempt to reinstall your antivirus and run a scan, or you could try to install a different anti-virus program (maybe just grab a free one like AVG, Avast, ClamWin, or Avira). The best solution, though, is to get a "rescue" disk from an anti-virus company--this is usually free. AVG, Avast and Avira are some good ones to start with. One might not work, another might not find the problem, but try several until one of them catches the problem.
NO solution to remove without antivirus. You Need upgraded antivirus. EG:- Quick Heal. No... Quickheal does not prove good to delete driveguard...! :(
Hey, This is the type of Conficker, conflicker virus, you can find a lot of information about it and solution here: http://www.conficker.name
It is DEFINITELY a scam. The program is mal-ware. To remove this "Antivirus 2009 scam" program, use the following website and download the mbam-setup.exe program. It will clean off your system when most anti-virus software won't. http://www.malwarebytes.org/ The opinion of Wolf_Soldier: Antivirus 2009 is Malware, it is also considered to be a rogue antivirus, which means that it has been created by an untrusted source. Antivirus 2009 is bad news, when it scans your machine it gives you false virus alerts, conning the user into paying for a useless Antivirus package, it also disables the uninstall fuction, which removes it.
Kill the virus. Whatever the virus may be.
AntiVirus
The worst I've came across is Brontok.a. It limits what you can do and is hard to get rid of. It disables regedit.exe, AntiVirus Software and other. Look up up on You Tube or something.
Some examples of cloud anti-virus products are Panda Cloud Antivirus.
If you suspect there is a virus on your computer, you should immediately scan your computer with an installed antivirus. When your antivirus finds a virus, either have it quarantined or removed. By quarantining a virus, you have the ability to send the file to the antivirus company for analysis, so that way they can protect other clients from the virus.
If you think your antivirus solution has been affected by a virus, you can try to clean it up by running a utility like Sophos Anti-Virus from the command line after booting your computer in Safe Mode. Sophos provides instructions for using their tools here: http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/13251.html
