Yes. A tiger, also known as Felis tigris is a very big and carnivorous feline (cat) mammal.
They belong to the Felidae family (also meaning cat). In appearance they have a light brown to brownish orange (and sometimes white)coat with crosswise (from side to side) black stripes. There were atleast eight subspecies that I know of.
Three of which have been extinct since the early 1900s - 1960.
The only five subspecies that are not extinct are the: # Bengal Tiger (Panthera t. tigris) # Amur Tiger (Panthera t. altaica) # South China Tiger (Panthera t. amoyensis) # Sumatran Tiger (Panthera t. sumatrae) # Indo-Chinese Tiger (Panthera t. corbetti)

∙ 13y agoThat depends on what you mean by "cat family." Tigers are part of the family Felidae, but they are not part of the subfamily Felinae... they're felids, but not felines.
In other words: tigers are clearly related to domestic cats, but they're not as closely related to them as, say, bobcats are.
