No it is not for the most part, and certainly not by that name. Besides, the reasons for trepanation were usually superstitious in nature. When people had severe migraines many years ago, they would assume it was demons in their skull causing the pain. So if you have something in your body that doesn't belong, it is only reasonable to want to let it out, right? So they would drill holes in people's heads for a medical cure or exorcism. Of course, as modern science came along, such ideas were shown to be unfounded and the practice mostly stopped.
There is a guy on BMEzine who thought this procedure would have spiritual effects because it would, in his thinking, make it easier for spirits or whatever to get inside or somehow put him closer to the spirit world. He convinced his friends to help him with this and they seriously studied how to do this, and eventually performed this procedure. After an initial placebo effect, he realized he felt no different than before removing a small piece of his skull.
Trepanation - album - was created on 1999-07-18.
In standard medical practice, trepanation is occasionally performed by a neurosurgeon in order to relieve pressure on the brain caused by trauma, or to remove a blood clot from brain tissue.
There is no such thing as a barber surgeon. Barbers cut hair.
If a doctor does it, pressure is relived and everything is alright. Anyone else does it and it will probably kill you.Although some people believe that it will expand their consciousness through increased blood flow to the brain, one person who went through the procedure said:"come to the frustrating conclusion [four weeks after the procedure] that the trepanation has had no lasting effect… Trepanation has no more physiological effect than any other trauma… it does not do what many hope it will."Read more about trepanation and self-trepanation in the link below.
Trepanation may be among the earliest treatments.
The potential side effects of alternative trepanation are severe, even life-threatening; they include permanent injury or death from infections, stroke , direct damage to brain tissue, generalized encephalitis, epilepsy, or brain abscesses.

Trepanning or trephining, in which the surgeon drilled a hole as large as 1-2 in diameter in the patient's skull without benefit of anesthesia.

Trepanation is an old form of surgery that dates back to 7000 B.C. It is done by making a hole in the back of the head with a circular saw in order to relieve pressure in the brain.
Genocide is the modern term used.
Essential tremor and tremor caused by a disease of the central nervous system cannot be prevented. Avoiding use of such stimulant drugs as caffeine and amphetamines can prevent tremor that occurs as a side effect of drug use.
