The best OS for a gaming PC will either be Windows XP (any part of the XP series) or Windows 7 (any part of the 7 series).
In my choice have a dual boot with ubuntu 10.04 and Mac OSX.....I use windows mostly for gaming and some entertaining process.
Don't use Windows use Linux Ubuntu
You would need to create a partition to install Windows to. Or you can run it in a virtualized environment using Virtualbox by Sun Microsystems. With virtualization you can run Windows or another operating system (OS) of your choice on top of Ubuntu. Of course with either method you will need an install disk of Windows. If you choose to do what is called a "dual-boot" from what I described earlier, you will like I have stated, create a partition into which you will install Windows to. Be careful though when you are working with partitions as it is best to backup all of your data in case of complications. To create a partition from within Ubuntu you may use a program called Gparted. You can install that through your "Applications" -> "Add Programs".
Ubuntu is best, but then I'm biased, as my computers all run Ubuntu!

In my opinion, Ubuntu is more user friendly than Windows. Other open source users may consider their chosen OS as being the best: Linux Mint, Puppy, Kubuntu, and so on - the list of distributions (distros) on offer is very long.
It depends on what you are trying to do. If you install anything over Windows 7 that is not a windows based system you may lose some application functionality if the other system does not have an equivalent. The same could be said if installing Ubuntu, since it may have functionality that is not present in Windows 7.
The best operating systems for personal desktop computing in the order of their rating: 1. Windows 7. 2. Ubuntu Linux. 3. Windows XP. If you are a resource cautious consumer, then "Ubuntu linux" or "Windows XP" is a good choice. If you want to have a good look and feel along with better performance, then "Ubuntu linux" or "Windows 7" is a good choice. Personally, I prefer "Ubuntu linux". Its performance, look and feel is optimized than the other mentioned Operating systems. It is also as user friendly as windows operating systems. It's security levels are high that you do not ever need to bother about getting infected vith malware. The other good thing about it is it is free and is comes bundled with the best free software. Maintenance is pretty easy while compared to the other operating systems.
Ubuntu is a powerful, open-source operating system, free to download online. Ubuntu gives you a few more features than Windows, and it is extremely fast in the world of computing. The latest release (at least as of 11/30/10) is Ubuntu Maverick Meercat (10.10). The next release will be released April of 2011. Its codename will be Natty Narwhal and its release number will be 11.04. You can do everything (Plus a few more things) that you can do with Windows or Mac. You can even re-distribute if you want to. With Ubuntu, you are able to work in any environment you choose, including where there is no wired-network, which is hard to set up with Windows and Mac. If you ever find youself wanting to download and install a Windows program, there is a free program called WINE (Windows Executor, which will let you do so. So basically, Ubuntu is the BEST operating system that is free and open-source out there. You can use it in many different ways.
This is just my opinion, but I like playing Crysis on my Ubuntu Computer. The graphics are absolutely amazing. But, you could pretty much play any game you want on Ubuntu as long as its also compatible with windows. All you have to do is install Wine and you can run them pretty well, but some of them don't work as nicely as others.
