Yes. The magma type is very viscous and taffy-like, so it traps gasses much better. When magma is loaded with pressurized gas bubbles it can explode if it exits the volcano. This is a major hazard to the city of Tacoma nearby. If the rainier erupts, the heat from the blast will melt ice caps on the summit causing deadly mudflows that will devastate the area in perhaps a 30-50 mile radius.
