To measure the total emf simply connect the battery and voltmeter with the right terminals , but to measure the terminal potential difference which is less than the emf the voltmeter is connected in parallel with the battery
Use a multimeter that has both scales on it . All you need to do is change the scale from AC to DC
Voltmeter will give you opposite readings or will not work at all.

Something is on drawing power from the battery. Always connect the positive cable first and the negative cable last.
Connect the positive + red charger cable to the positive + red battery post. Then connect the negative - black charger cable to the engine somewhere. Most engines have something metal sticking up that you can connect to. Do not connect the negative charge cable to the negative battery post, always connect it to the engine.
