I take it you're refereeing to explorer.exe (Windows Explorer).
explorer.exe is used by Windows to display your desktop and all windows, files, etc...
If you kill the task "explorer.exe" under the "Processes" tab in the task manager you'll see what it's used for.
Don't worry, nothing harmful will happen, you can easily start it again by clicking "New Task..." under the "Applications" tab and start "explorer.exe" (without "").
If you fail at starting it again for some reason it will be back to normal after a reboot.
